Coffee Craze

There seems to be a trend developing at our school.  As I walked to class this morning, about half of the people had some sort of coffee in their hands.  There was a Pumpkin Spice Latte, a few Dunkin Donuts iced coffees, some homemade blends in a travel mug, and Frappuccinos from Starbucks. In previous years, coffee seemed more of a drink associated not with high school students, but with college kids and elderly people. A coffee information website stated that the teenager coffee trend “is spreading like wildfire.” That comes to no surprise because the website also stated that “in fact, some health professionals recommend coffee, even for teens, because studies reveal that it helps with constipation and reduces the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease, cirrhosis of the liver and perhaps other health conditions.  Coffee apparently contains some antioxidants, polyphenols and other chemicals that are beneficial for the body.  Coffee can also help people stay alert for studying, driving and other activities.” People have many assumptions on the reasons for this new craze, but regardless of the reason, it seems to be beneficial, so let’s continue this new coffee craze. Dunkin Donuts has iced coffee from 3-6 P.M. for only $0.99, McDonald’s has a McCafé discount of buy one get one free from 2-6 P.M., and Starbucks also has a buy one get one holiday drink special. The coffee possibilities are endless and affordable, so keep caffeinating!
