On Tuesday, November 5th, millions of people went to go vote for the next President of the United States. The two major candidates on the ballots were Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, and Donald Trump, the Republican nominee. Donald Trump won the election, with 312 electoral votes, and over 76 million votes, winning him both the electoral college and the popular vote, which he failed to win in 2016. Republicans took control of the House and the Senate as well during this election, gaining 4 seats in the Senate.
Donald Trump will be the second president to ever serve two non-consecutive terms, with Grover Cleveland being the first to serve non-consecutive terms. According to the Will County Clerk, Harris won in Will County, with 157,453 votes: 49.1% of the votes. The Social Science department also put on a mock election. Student Caroline Howey, a junior who participated in the mock election said that the election was, “a fun way to participate in the election for people who can’t actually vote.” The mock election results were as follows: with about 700 voters, Trump earned 61% of the student vote, Harris earned 31%, and the independent category earned 8% of the vote. Overall, the mock election was a great, interactive way to show students how every vote matters, and the importance of participating in government.
