On October 24th, Lily Bonovich of Troop 732, a junior from the Lincoln-Way area, earned the rank of Eagle Scout.
The Eagle Scout rank is the highest title someone can earn in the Scouts BSA program. It requires a lot of hard work, dedication, and service to the community, along with completion of something called the Eagle Scout Service Project. This is a project with the main purposes of helping others, learning leadership skills, and developing a realistic plan for completion.
Lily’s project was to make an outdoor classroom space for teachers to bring their students to at Dr. Julian Rogus School, where she attended kindergarten through 4th grade. Lily said this in response to a question about where she got the idea: “I loved to go outside for a lesson or two, but it would always just be on the sidewalk or grass, so I wanted to give the school the access to a fun environment so teachers can bring their students outside, and hope that more students will start to love going outside like I did.”
In her time in Scouts, Lily has had many amazing experiences. Over the summer, she was on camp staff for Rainbow Scout Reservation in Morris and flew to Florida to stay a week at a high adventure base in the Florida Keys. In the summer of 2023, she attended National Jamboree at the Summit High Adventure Base in West Virginia, along with about 15,000 other Scouts. This upcoming summer she hopes to be on summer camp staff again and plans to go to the Northern Tier High Adventure Base in Minnesota and the Kandersteg International Scout Centre in Switzerland.
