November 11th is a day set aside to celebrate the real-life heroes that sacrifice their lives to protect the freedoms we all enjoy. This day is called Veterans Day and is not appreciated enough. Most of us know a relative or friend who has served or currently serves in the military but most of us do not know that we have some of these heroes right here at our school. Mr. Noe, Mr. Balluff, Mr. Knoblauch, Mr. Schliffka, Mr. Tsoukatos, and Mr. Hinson are all LWC staff members who have bravely served our country and continue to be amazing role models for students. Their unwavering commitment to protecting our freedoms deserves our deepest gratitude and respect.
Each veteran’s journey is unique, marked by courage and resilience. Many have faced unimaginable challenges, both on the battlefield and at home. Their service has ensured the safety and security of our nation, allowing us to live peacefully and live our lives to the fullest. We are fortunate enough to have teachers so willing to share their experiences in the military, such as Mr. Balluff.
Mr. Balluff was a 14 Romeo in the Army meaning he handled air defense and drove the Bradley tank that shot stinger missiles to shoot down enemy aircraft. He chose to join the military because he was not a particularly good student in high school and was not happy when he tried joining the trades. He was looking for an affordable way to make a living, which was offered to him by enlisting. He chose to join the Army because his grandfather had also been in the Army, and he wanted to follow in his footsteps. During his time in the military, he was stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas, and Fort Bragg, North Carolina where he spent most of his time. He was also stationed overseas in Iraq from 2003-2005. Mr. Balluff says that his military experience helped him learn how to be patient with others which is extremely important in his role as a teacher. He says that the Army provided him with many great memories, but his favorite is the relationships he got to make. While in the army he was able to create life-long bonds and even still talks to the guys he was stationed with overseas regularly. Mr. Balluff’s story is just one example of the six remarkable staff members who served our nation.
Not just Veterans Day, but every day, should be a time to thank these heroes for their service. Whether through a simple “thank you,” a letter, or taking part in events right here in our community, every gesture of appreciation counts. To all veterans, we salute you and extend our heartfelt thanks for your incredible service to our country.
