Last week on Thursday September 26th, the Knights boys soccer team took on district rivals Lincoln-Way East. The Knights went into this game knowing they had to give it their all. Before the game, Roma FC soccer organization held what they call a “Teddy Bear Toss.” This event (pictured above) consisted of Roma soccer athletes throwing various teddy bears onto the field. Each teddy bear that got thrown was donated to the Children Services within the Lincoln-Way community. Young members of the Roma FC soccer club were also invited onto the field to stand beside a LWE or LWC soccer player, allowing the younger members of our soccer community the opportunity to look up to their high school counterparts.
After that, it was time for the game to begin. The Knights came out electric and ready to battle the Griffins. The first half of the game was very hard-fought, and the Knights gave up zero points. However, the Griffins were also prepared to play. They also kept the Knights at zero points, leaving the score 0-0 at the half. The Knights’ goalie had an amazing 3 stops against rival Griffins’ top scorer, securing the the 0-0 score for the first half of the game.
The 0-0 score was not for trying: there were honorable attempts by Connor Pate, Reilly Follet, and Charlie Hrebic – who not only had amazing footwork and speed keeping up with the Griffins, but put up an extreme effort to hold them. This kept the crowd on the edge of their seats the entire game. As the game came to a close in the last seconds, the Griffins scored a goal. Despite the lead on the Knights and the ultimate Griffin victory, the Knights played a hard-fought and sportsmanlike game. The Knights may have ended the game with the loss, but they won in the amount of effort that went into this game.
