Art is a part of everything in our lives. From the jewelry we wear, to the doodles drawn in notebook margins, it is all a type of art. The Lincoln-Way Central Art Department offers a variety of amazing classes for students to take. Hidden in a hallway near B wing, creativity is constantly blossoming. Our school offers classes in jewelry, ceramics, photography, painting, and drawing.
No matter your artistic skills, any student can sign up for an art class. Many of the art classes are only semester-long classes and build on one another progressively. Ceramics 1 and Ceramics 2 are each semester long classes and are an introduction to 3D Art. Lena Alhasan, a junior at Central, took Ceramics last year and described her time in the class: “As someone who doesn’t have artistic talent, ceramics was a way where I could express myself through art in a way that I wasn’t able to do successfully through drawing or painting. It was a fun way for me to destress and create pretty sculptures that made me feel proud!”
Jewelry is a one-semester class that explores basic design techniques and jewelry-making processes. Projects in the past have included creating pins, keychains, and earrings! If a more traditional drawing and painting is more your style, Central offers that, too! Art Fundamentals, which is a prerequisite to Drawing and Painting, allows students to explore shading, perspective, and design through different medias including pencil, ink, paint, and pastels. AP Art and Design is the most advanced class students can take, which allows them to develop their own theme and compile an art portfolio. Lincoln-Way Central has also introduced AP 3D Art and Design this year, which allows students who are interested in 3D creations to grow even more!
These are not even all the art classes offered. Photography, Illustration, and Digital Design are also amazing classes that are offered. Everyone who is in these classes expresses how great it is to have a break from rigorous classes and get to create amazing art. When picking electives for next year, keep art in mind!
