On April 19th Taylor Swift released her newest album, The Tortured Poets Department. Though there was much excitement and encouragement from many a fans, there were also people that were looking for anything to criticize or to make Swift look bad. This needs to stop.
Take, for instance, her carbon footprint. At the beginning of the year, news spread that Swift was the leading celebrity when it comes to CO2 emissions. While her private jet has produced a couple thousand tons of CO2, her numbers do not even crack the top thirty celebrities with the most CO2 emissions. Yet, she is the only one being called out. Why is that? Is it that people are jealous of her success, or are they just bored and trying to start another controversy? People need to start looking at this situation from her perspective. It is likely that one of the main reasons she travels by private jet is to ensure her own safety. If she were to go to an airport and get on a regular plane like anyone else, she would attract attention. This would not only disrupt the flow of the airport but also potentially put Swift in danger. So, instead of pointing fingers at Taylor, people should put themselves in her shoes, because most of us would act in the same way if we had the means.
Now, just a month before the release of her new album, speculations circulated saying that Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce had called it quits. Neither Kelce, Swift, nor anyone they are associated with has given people any reason to believe that the two broke up. So why were people spreading false information about something they know nothing about? For years people have said that “Taylor Swift dates too many guys” or that she “only writes songs about break-ups.” But now that she is in a healthy relationship and is happy, people still are not satisfied. Nothing will ever be good enough for the public. Most people just want to hear things that are controversial or juicy, even if it is at the expense of a person’s happiness, like Swift’s. We should all just leave Swift’s private life, private. Imagine that you had millions of people in the world watching your every move and judging you, you wouldn’t like it either.
With all of this in mind, I’m not saying everyone must like Taylor Swift, or that she has never made a mistake. Of course she has. She is a celebrity, not a god. Taylor Swift is a human just like the rest of us. Everyone makes mistakes. If you don’t like Swift or her music, then that’s okay. Everyone has their own opinions and different tastes in music, so if hers isn’t your cup of tea, then don’t listen to it. What you should not do is disrespect her or spread false rumors. She is human too and deserves to be treated as such. How would it make you feel if you were Swift and had to listen to people constantly critiquing your every move, appearance, etc. You would not appreciate it, and neither does she.
