On Wednesday April 24th, Lincoln-Way Central’s Student Council held its annual Teacher of the Knight dinner. Teacher of the Knight is a student council led event where junior and senior members honor one of their teachers by inviting them to dinner. Students pick teachers that have had and continue to have an impact on their life. Once a student decides what teacher they would like to invite, an anonymous invitation is delivered to that teacher. This year, the invites were given via an empty photo frame with a card.
The night began with students and their selected teachers talking while having Gatos for dinner. While the actual eating period seemed short, the conversations had and memories made will linger with both the teachers and students for years to come. As dinner came to an end, trivia began. Prior to the event, attendees were requested to fill out a form containing random questions about themselves. While there technically was no winner, I think we all won the game simply by learning quirky facts about fellow students and the teachers we look up to. Favorites of the night included discovering that Dr. Baran used to have a mullet and that both Coach Napier and Coach Fahey once had bleach-blonde tips.
After the trivia ended, the speeches began. Before the day of the event, students who signed up to attend wrote individual speeches for each teacher. These speeches consisted of various memories and explained the many impacts teachers have on each of their students. Many students made sure to include sentimental and occasionally fun stories of why they chose their teacher. Each speech, although ranging in length, made sure to call attention to the respect and love we as students have for the teachers we see every day here at Lincoln-Way Central. Once all speeches had concluded, teachers were surprised with their very own copy of their student’s speech.
All of us who participated in honoring a teacher on this special occasion saw how important it is to recognize our teachers for all they do. Teacher of the Knight 2024 was a great success and made lots of memories for those in attendance. If ever given the chance, take the time and thank a teacher for what they do; they shape who we are and we let them know how much we appreciate them. We look forward to attending this event again next year to show our appreciation for our staff here at Lincoln-Way Central.
