On December 7th, Lincoln-Way Central held their 53rd annual Madrigal concert. A wonderful night of classic Christmas carols and songs, Madrigals offers an evening of music, theatrics, and even complimentary cookies, figgy pudding, and apple cider.
Madrigals originated in 14th century Italy. At its core, Madrigals promotes creating music without accompaniment, or acapella. With multiple groups of singers, there is a large selection of traditional Christmas hymns, sung in various languages such as English, Spanish, French, Latin, and Hebrew. A few songs included the infamous “We Wish you a Merry Christmas,” “Silent Night,” as well as “King Wenceslas.” During intermission and before the show, the audience enjoys music from LWC guitarists.
Another aspect of Madrigals is the story that slowly unfolds throughout the night: A story of the antics in a kingdom. This story that is presented changes and varies every year, which ensures that no two Madrigals performances are the same. This year’s storyline included the kingdom’s local town crier fighting to keep her job as a new journalist spreads intriguing, but falsified events occurring throughout the land. The audience is guaranteed to stay engaged as the actors interact with various audience members in their charming and comedic endeavor to uncover the truth about the town’s new journalist.
The Madrigals concert is undoubtedly a special holiday treat. Full of entertainment, this performance is fun for the entire family as Christmas approaches.
