Knights, Camera, Action! Homecoming week is one of the most memorable experiences a high school student can have. Students love dressing up on spirit days, listening to music during passing periods, showing support for the school at the football game, and dancing the night away during the dance. But much more goes into homecoming week than most people think. So, while students are competing in the Olympics, shopping for their dresses, asking others to the dance, and buying their tickets to the events, what role does the staff play in making the most-loved week of the year so special?
First, Homecoming week couldn’t be a reality without the help of Mrs. O’Connell and Mrs. Gorniak running Student Council. According to Mrs. O’Connell, “As the Student Council sponsors, Mrs. Gorniak and I oversee spirit days, school decorations, music during the passing periods, homecoming t-shirts, dance ticket sales, and the Homecoming Dance.” Starting on the first Monday of the school year, student council is planning and voting on themes, decorations, and more! Student Council plays a crucial role in it all from seeing the decorations in the halls on Monday morning to going to the dance on Saturday night. That amazing DJ at the dance is also booked months in advance so that students can sing and dance! They truly deserve a round of applause for their hard work!
Next, Mr. Waddell and Mr. Fetherling make a huge difference in the week with their hard work in Homecoming Olympics, the pep assembly, and more! The pep assembly is unforgettable every year with music, dancing, and special events. Mr. Waddell acknowledges, “Mr. Fetherling and I start working on different ideas right when school begins. I want to make sure I give credit to Mr. Fetherling, because he is a huge part of this event and help to me during this time. We have videos, musical acts, performances, surprise guests and more.” The performances also make the assembly special. In the time before, teachers juggle lesson plans and grading with dance or cheer practices so that students can have fun watching them dance with the cheer team. According to Mrs. Sieber, “Practices are an hour and a half on Wednesday and Thursday, then another hour before the assembly. They also give you a video to practice at home!”
Overall, tons of hard work and support goes into Homecoming Week, and it wouldn’t happen without the staff at Lincoln-Way Central. The beginning of the school year is stressful, but the staff puts the extra time and effort into the week so that everyone has fun, and they definitely succeeded this year!
