The countdown to Homecoming begins the day school starts. It is the most exciting thing for most student in the fall, and something that requires preparation over several weeks. Homecoming is a special celebration for the Knights because the week of is jam-packed with fun activities to prepare for the night of Homecoming.
To fuel the excitement leading up to one of the most anticipated events of the school year, we participate in the annual Spirit Week. Spirit Week includes fun, engaging themes that everyone can take part in. This year’s themes consisted of Groufit v.s. Denim, Jersey Day, Barbie v.s. Ken, Neon and LWC spirit wear day. Some of the personal favorites that the most students and teachers participated in were Groufit V.S Denim and Barbie V.S Ken. Each new theme of the day encourages students to show their creativity in ways otherwise unseen. It creates an environment that connects the student body and lets them show their excitement for the upcoming dance.
During the Homecoming Olympics, students find a group of 8, plus a teacher, and compete against each other for victory. Students from all grades come together in preparation for the Homecoming Dance and show their school pride while having it out against other teams on the football field. Some of the exciting events at the Homecoming Olympics games include basketball, tug of war, relay races, an obstacle course, and a dunk tank. In preparation for these activities, the students also get to pick a team theme and costume. Three of the groups that stood out on the field were Fresh Kutts, who wore bald caps, Jaws of Victory, wearing stylish shark heads, and Hess’ Hotdogs, dressed in hotdog costumes. This event helps bring forth a sense of community within the student body while displaying their enthusiasm for the Homecoming Dance.
Alongside other fun Homecoming activities, the pep rally is an enjoyable way to conclude the school week while preparing students for the exciting weekend ahead of them. With fun performances from the varsity cheerleaders and Rhythm Knights that include teachers and football players, singing competitions displaying the capabilities of students, and funny photo compilations, the pep rally is a great way to reinforce the energy of the week. The pep rally gives stage to the many different talents within the Central community. Overall, it is a well put-together assembly that introduces hype for the Homecoming game that night and the dance the next day.
To conclude the school week, the Homecoming Game brings not only the students of Lincoln-Way Central, but the entire community together to have one last celebration before the dance. At the game, students wear all types of gear based on the theme that student leaders pick out in advance. The Homecoming Game theme this year was USA, so students wore flag capes, flag hats, and even went as far as painting their bodies. It is a tradition for all current students to be in the student section, dressed accordingly, and get loud to show our Knight pride. The win against Sandburg made the game that much better. The student section brought the energy and made the stadium shake with every touchdown. By the end of the night, the students were proud to be Knights and couldn’t wait for the following day.
Finally, the long-awaited day is here. The day of the Homecoming Dance. There are activities planned for the entire day. Students get lunch, get ready, take pictures, and hang out together before the dance itself even starts. Then, it’s time to go to the dance. Upon entering the field house, you are welcomed with decorations fit to the Knights, Camera, Action theme. The DJ was giving the crowd back-to-back bangers with funny commentary from the MC. Students joined together around the stage, singing and sweaty, to celebrate Homecoming and show how amazing it is to be a Knight. Overall, Homecoming was a very unifying, thrilling experience for the Lincoln-Way Central Knights!
